DataSplice Software Configuration

Create ODBC Data Sources

The DataSplice Server uses Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) to connect to any available data sources. For this to work, an ODBC data source name (DSN) must be configured on the DataSplice Server Machine to connect to the Database Machine.

To edit the ODBC settings, double-click the Data Sources (ODBC) configuration option in Control Panel > Administrative Tools. This will display the ODBC Data Source Administrator:

ODBC Data Source Administrator

It is best not to use User DSN, especially if you are running DataSplice as a service, because these DSNs are associated with the current login and will not be visible to the SYSTEM account. It is generally a good idea to create the DSN as a System DSN.

Create a new DSN using the appropriate driver for the database platform being used.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using Oracle, please be sure to use the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver, rather than the driver provided by Oracle. It is necessary to use the driver provided by Microsoft to ensure that DataSplice works correctly with the data source.

Give descriptive names to the data sources, especially if you have multiple sources, such as test, development, production, etc.

Consult the documentation for your database driver for details on the available configuration options. For further information about ODBC with DataSplice, please refer to the ODBC Reference section of the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual.

Start the DataSplice Server

There are two ways to run the DataSplice Server:

As a Service
This is the preferred way of running the server. You should have already registered the DataSplice service as described earlier in this guide. To start the service select DataSplice Service in the Services Control Panel applet and click the Start button.
As an Application
Starting the DataSplice Server icon location in the Programs menu will start the server as an application. When run as an application, the DataSplice Server will display an icon in the system tray. When the server first starts, the icon will show different colors blinking through the three boxes, symbolizing that the server is initializing: DataSplice Server Icon Initializing . You cannot connect to the server until it is done initializing. When the icon stops blinking with colors, the server is done initializing and is ready to be connected to: DataSplice Server Icon .

Note: Only one instance of the DataSplice Server can run at any time on a single computer.

Connect With the Administration Client

On an Administration Workstation, select Start > Programs > DataSplice > Administration Client to start the Administration Client. From the File menu, select Connect and you will see the following dialog:

Connection Options Dialog

The default administrator user name is Admin and the initial password is changethis.

Note: Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive in DataSplice.

Enter the correct server address and click the Connect button. If this is the first login you will be prompted to change the default password.

For further information about this screen, please see the Connection Options section of the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual.

Enter License Key

The functionality of the Administration Client will be limited until a valid license key is provided to the server.

Expand the System Information item in the left pane of the Administration Client and choose the Options item. Select the Licenses tab and paste in the license key provided to you by a DataSplice representative.

Click the Update button button image to apply the license key to the server. This will prompt you to reconnect to the server to refresh the Administration connection.

For further information about licenses, please see the Licenses Tab explanation in the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual.

Create Initial Connection Profile

Again, select the System Information > Options item in the Administration Client. Click the Connection Profiles tab to edit the connection profiles available to the server:

Connection Profiles

The server uses connection profiles to define the details needed to connect to a data source for a particular view. By default, the views distributed with the DataSplice Add-On Modules use a connection profile named maximo.

Click the Add button to create a new connection profile, give it a name (such as maximo), select the appropriate ODBC Data Source name from the drop down, and enter in the authentication credentials needed to connect to the database.

Click the Update button button image in the toolbar to apply your changes to the server.

For more information, please see the Connection Profiles Tab section of the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual.

Test Available Views

Now click the Views item in the left pane of the Administration Client. You will see a list of the available views, which will depend on which modules you have installed.

Select one and click the Preview tab. You should see data from the selected database. If an error message is displayed, it should give a hint why the server was unable to display any data. If the errors persist, contact DataSplice Customer Support for assistance.

For additional information, please refer to the Views area of the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual.

Installation Complete

Congratulations - DataSplice is now installed and configured!

Please refer to the DataSplice Administration Client User Manual for more information about how to configure the DataSplice Administration Client to provide powerful mobile solutions for your end-users.

In addition, you may want to register for a Webcast to receive live training from a DataSplice specialist to assist you in tailoring your installation to meet your business needs.
