Licensing

Before productive actions can be accomplished, the DataSplice Server must be properly licensed. To access the licensing area within the Server Settings and Configuration section, select License Settings from the Configuration Section drop-down list.

License Settings

Not only do licenses enable basic functionality, but other features can also be controlled through licensing. One of the biggest features of DataSplice licensing is the ability to break the licenses up into different products. Product licenses control access between users, groups, and views.

In addition to product licenses, a server license is required to determine core functionality. Upon initial setup, a new server license needs to be entered. The nature of this license determines if the product will be standard "out of the box" capable or a completely customizable "development" instance of DataSplice.

Both server and product licenses are generated by DataSplice and then made available to the administrators.

Server License Information

This section details information specific to the server license used for this DataSplice Server instance.

Entering a Server License

To enter a new server license:

  1. Choose Action > Install License From File from the menu.
  2. From the resulting Open dialog box, browse to the location of the server.license file and select the file.
  3. Click Open. The license file should take effect, populating the Server Key and Date Issued fields in the Server License Details section.

Product License Information

This section details the different product licenses available in this DataSplice instance.

Product License Information

Expiration Date This field shows the date, if any, on which this product license will expire. If the field is blank, the license will not expire.

Entering Product Licenses

The DataSplice Server supports any number of product licenses, which can then be tied to individual views.

To enter a new product license from a file:

  1. Choose Action > Install License From File from the menu.
  2. From the resulting Open dialog box, browse to the location of the license file for the product desired, such as product.license, and select the file.
  3. Click Open. The license file should now be listed in the Product License Information section.

To enter a new product license from a string:

  1. Choose Action > Install License from the menu.
  2. In the resulting dialog box, paste the entire license string value into the License Key text area.
  3. Click OK. The license should now be listed in the Product License Information section.

License Usage

DataSplice uses a concurrent licensing scheme. This means that whenever users have a session, they will consume a single product license for each product they are using. This happens when a client is connected to the server or has obtained an offline session.

Note: A user consumes a license for each product the user has access to. If the user has access to multiple product groups, a license is concurrently consumed for each. If the product contains sub-products, it still only utilizes a single license for that product. The Administration Client connection does not consume a license.

Some installations may have users who fail to log out and therefore are consuming a license while not actually utilizing the system. Setting the client timeout can be used to automatically disconnect the users, or clients can be manually disconnected to free licenses for other users.

Note: Shutting the DataSplice Server down and restarting it does not release licenses acquired through offline sessions. The administrator can manually revoke the offline session from within the Administration Client. Generally, the only reason for revoking offline licenses (sessions) is if the session has been orphaned and the administrator needs to free up the offline license.
