Installing Plug-in Files Manually on Mobile Devices
If the Windmill provisioning service is not being used, the client plug-in files can be installed manually. Client plug-in files only need to be installed on the device if client-side printing actions are being used. If only server-side printing actions are being used, it is not necessary to install any barcode printing plug-in files onto the mobile devices. This installation process uses an ActiveSync connection between a host PC and a mobile device. The files can then be copied across this connection from the host machine to the mobile device. If the DataSplice Remote Client application has not already been installed on the mobile devices, then the steps detailed in the manual installation section of the DataSplice installation manual will include the files necessary for client-side printing actions. If the Remote Client has been previously installed, then the plug-in-specific files will need to be installed as well using the following steps.
Pre-installation Considerations
- Ensure that ActiveSync is installed on the desktop host computer being used. If not already installed, ActiveSync can be downloaded directly from Microsoft.
- Ensure that the mobile device is properly connected to the host computer, generally with a USB or serial cable.
Installation Steps
Connecting with ActiveSync
- Start ActiveSync. If a USB connection is being used, simply connecting the cable to the device and the host computer will generally start ActiveSync automatically. If ActiveSync does not automatically start, it may be necessary to use the Get Connected wizard to establish the connection. The wizard will automatically create the proper connection.
- A prompt will be displayed to select the desired type of partnership. For the tasks involved in this installation, a Guest partnership will be adequate.
- The Connection screen will appear when a connection is established.
Exploring the Device Contents
- Click the Explore button or click File > Explore Device from the menu to open a file explorer window for the mobile device. It will generally take a few seconds for the device's contents to be displayed.
- Browse to the folder where DataSplice is installed. In general, this is a
DataSplice3folder.
Transferring Files
- Open Windows Explorer on the desktop PC.
- Browse to the directory where DataSplice was installed on the desktop PC. By default, this is
C:\Program Files\DataSplice3. - In this directory, browse to the
WindowsCEfolder. - Depending on whether the device is running on a Pocket PC (
ppc) or a Handheld PC (hpc) platform, browse to the corresponding folder. - Browse to the folder that corresponds to the chipset of the mobile device, such as
armormips.Example: If DataSplice is installed in the default location on the PC, and the mobile device of interest is an Intermec 750, which uses an ARM chipset on a Pocket PC platform, the correct source folder would be
C:\Program Files\DataSplice3\WindowsCE\ppc\arm. - Right-click on the
DataSplice.Printing.cf.dllfile and choose Copy. - Go to the explorer window of the mobile device. While still in the
DataSplice3folder, right-click in the window and choose Paste. - A message may be displayed, warning that some of the files will be converted when they are moved onto the mobile device. Click OK to continue. A progress screen will be displayed as the file is transferred to the mobile device.
- Back on the explorer window on the host desktop PC, browse into the
Resourcesfolder. - Right-click on the
DataSplice.Printing.resourcesfile and choose Copy. - Go to the explorer window of the mobile device. While still in the
DataSplice3folder, browse into theResourcesfolder. - Right-click in the window and choose Paste.
- A message may be displayed, warning that some of the files will be converted when they are moved onto the mobile device. Click OK to continue. A progress screen will be displayed as the file is transferred to the mobile device.
Invoking Client-side Printing Actions
After the aforementioned steps have been completed, the files necessary for client-side printing actions should be installed correctly. To invoke these client-side printing actions, the Display Plug-in Functions menu item can be used, as discussed in the menu section of the DataSplice Remote Client manual.
