Installing the Remote Client Manually
Rather than using Windmill, it is alternatively possible to manually install the DataSplice Remote Client onto a mobile device. This is accomplished by using ActiveSync to transfer the necessary files from a desktop PC to the mobile device.
Pre-Installation Considerations
- Ensure that ActiveSync is installed on the desktop computer you will be using. If you do not already have it on your desktop PC, you can download the latest version of ActiveSync.
- Ensure that the mobile device can communicate by either a cable (serial or USB), Ethernet connection, wireless card (802.11b), or infrared port with the desktop computer.
- Ensure that the Network TCP/IP configuration and IP addressing is configured.
Installation Steps
Connecting with ActiveSync
- Start ActiveSync. If a USB connection is being used, simply connecting the cable to the device and the host computer will generally start ActiveSync automatically.
- A prompt will be displayed to select the desired type of partnership. Cancel this prompt because it is not necessary to transfer files to the mobile device.
- The Connection screen will appear when a connection is established:
Exploring the Device Contents
- Click the Explore Device button
or click File > Explore from the menu to open a file explorer window for the mobile device. It will generally take a few seconds for the device's contents to be displayed. - If the device has an SD card or other non-volatile storage media, the DataSplice Remote Client should be installed there. Depending on the type of device and the type of storage card, this may be in a variety of folder locations. For example, a typical SD card's contents are often located in the
My Pocket PC\SDMMC Diskfolder. If a non-volatile storage card is not present, browse to theMy Pocket PC\Program Filesfolder. Keep in mind, however, that if the Remote Client is not installed to non-volatile storage, the files will be lost if the mobile device loses battery power or is cold rebooted (reset). - Right click on an empty area of the window and choose New Folder. Name it
DataSplice3.
Transferring Files
Open Windows Explorer on the desktop PC. Browse to the directory where DataSplice was installed on the desktop PC. By default, this is C:\Program Files\DataSplice3. In this directory, browse to the WindowsCE folder. The following steps should now be performed to properly install the DataSplice files and the SQL CE database.
DataSplice Remote Client Files
The initial files to transfer over to the device are the core DataSplice Remote Client files.
- Depending on whether the device is running on a Pocket PC (
ppc) or a Handheld PC (hpc) platform, browse to the corresponding folder. Browse to the folder that corresponds to the chipset of the mobile device, such asarm,mips,sh3, orsh4.
C:\Program Files\DataSplice3\WindowsCE\ppc\arm.- Select all of the files from the appropriate directory on the desktop PC. Right-click the selection and choose Copy.
- Go to the explorer window of the mobile device. While still in the
DataSplice3folder that was recently created, right-click in the window and choose Paste. - A message may be displayed, warning that some of the files will be converted when they are moved onto the mobile device. Click OK to continue. A progress screen will be displayed as the files are transferring to the mobile device.
- When the files have successfully transferred to the mobile device, they will be listed within the
DataSplice3folder.
SQL CE Database
In addition to the core DataSplice files, the SQL CE database also needs to be installed.
- On the desktop PC, browse to
C:\Program Files\DataSplice3\WindowsCE\sqlce. - Choose the correct SQL CE version based on the operating system version of the mobile device. In most cases, the following version requirements hold true:
- Use SQL CE 2.0 for most Windows CE 3.x devices - browse to the
v2.0folder. - Use SQL CE 3.0 for most Windows CE 4.x and 5.x devices - browse to the
v3.0folder.
- Use SQL CE 2.0 for most Windows CE 3.x devices - browse to the
- If problems are experienced using the determined version of the SQL CE database, it may be necessary to remove the database from the device (using the Remove Programs area) and attempt to install the other version. When in doubt, version 2.0 is generally compatible with a wider range of systems, especially older devices, than is version 3.0.
- Browse to the correct folder corresponding to the version of Windows CE on the mobile device, such as
wce400for a Windows CE 4.x device. - Browse to the correct folder corresponding to the device's processor, such as
armv4for an ARM processor.
C:\Program Files\DataSplice3\WindowsCE\sqlce\v3.0\wce500\armv4i.- Copy the
.cabfiles within the directory. For example, in the scenario mentioned above, thesqlce30.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CABandsqlce30.repl.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CABfiles should be copied. - Go to the explorer window of the mobile device. In the
DataSplice3folder, right-click in the window and choose Paste. - A message may be displayed, warning that the file may be converted when moved onto the mobile device. Click OK to continue. A progress screen will be displayed as the file is transferring to the mobile device.
- When the file has successfully transferred to the mobile device, it will be listed within the
DataSplice3folder. - Click the
.cabfile on the device to install the SQL CE database.
Creating a Shortcut
- Right-click on the
RemoteClient.exefile and choose Copy. - Browse to
My Pocket PC\Windows\Start Menu\Programsin the mobile device's explorer window. - Right-click on a blank area of this folder and select Paste Shortcut. A shortcut file, named
Shortcut to RemoteClient.exewill be placed in the folder. - Right-click on the
Shortcut to RemoteClient.exefile and choose Rename. Change the filename toDataSplice 3.0.
Launching the Remote Client
The DataSplice Remote Client application can now be launched on the mobile device at any time by selecting Start > Programs > DataSplice 3.0.
